Lesson 1: Understanding the Data Protection Act

Key Points

  • The Data Protection Act (2020) protects the privacy rights of individuals in Jamaica.

  • It applies to any person or organization that collects, stores, or uses personal data — called Data Controllers or Data Processors.

  • The Information Commissioner oversees compliance with the Act.

  • Personal data = any information that can identify a person (e.g. name, TRN, address, phone number, photo, etc.).

💡 Example:
If you store customer names and phone numbers for delivery — you are processing personal data and must comply with the Act.

Answer to Remember:

The Data Protection Act applies to all businesses that collect or process personal data — regardless of size.
